Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign
Improving cancer outcomes for our Black communities
The campaign launched across South East London encouraging Black women aged 50 to 71, to attend their breast screening appointment when invited and Black men aged 45 and over to talk to their GP about having a PSA blood test.
The campaign, which has been built in partnership with our Black African and Caribbean communities, has included billboard advertising, social media, radio partnerships and community engagement led by local advocates.
From providing peace of mind, taking charge of your own health, to doing it for your loved ones, there are many reasons why it is so important we all stay on top of our health checks, screenings and tests. It is the simplest act of self-care – a genuine practice to preserve your own health.
But with so much on our plates, it is also easy for important actions concerning our health to slip. We understand – but good health underpins everything about our lives.
Health is wealth – so together, let’s priorities our health.

How can I help promote the campaign?
The campaign assets have been produced in partnership with the specialist multicultural marketing agency, MMC and feature well known and respected local advocates – including business owners and faith and community leaders - alongside those with lived experience of both cancers.
You can promote the campaign across social media by downloading the assets here.

Targeted Lung Health Checks (TLHC)
The Targeted Lung Health Checks programme first launched in 2019 as a pilot in Manchester and in 2023 became the next national screening programme in England. It forms part of the NHS England Long Term Plan target for early cancer diagnosis where 75% of cancers are diagnosed at stage 1 and 2.
So far, across England, more than 1 million people have taken up their lung cancer screening invitation and diagnosed more than 5,500 people with lung cancer. Over 75% of these lung cancers were found at an early stage (1 or 2), compared to less than 30% of lung cancers detected outside of screening.
Targeted Lung Health Checks are currently being offered to people living in Southwark, Greenwich, Lambeth and Lewisham who are between the ages of 55 to 74 and have ever smoked, as they are at greater risk of lung cancer. They will be available in all boroughs across South East London by 2026.
